A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth, known as perigee full moon. The Moon near the horizon looks larger than when the Moon is higher in the sky, a phenomenon known as the Moon illusion .

This event makes the moon appear larger and brighter than a typical full moon. Despite what the name suggests, the difference can be subtle to the naked eye, but those who know where to look will notice its enhanced size and shine.

The term supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle and has become a popular way to describe these visually striking full moons. Supermoons typically occur three to four times a year, making them relatively frequent yet still a celestial event to look forward to.

Key Characteristics of a Supermoon:

  • Appears up to 14% larger than an average full moon.

  • Can be up to 30% brighter.

  • Coincides with the moon's orbit at its' closest approach to Earth

Previous Supermoons

There have already been two supermoons this year, and there are still two more to come. Here are the supermoons that have already taken place:

August Super Blue Moon

The first supermoon of the year, also a supermoon "Blue Moon," appeared on August 19, 2024. The term "Blue Moon" refers to the second full moon in a single calendar month—a relatively rare occurrence. Expect the moon to shine especially bright on this night, offering an excellent opportunity for moon gazing.

September Super Harvest Moon

September 18, 2024, brought the Super Harvest Moon, also known as the Green Corn Moon or Dog Moon. This moon is named for its proximity to the autumnal equinox, traditionally aiding farmers with extended evening light. There will also be a partial lunar eclipse, adding an extra layer of spectacle to the event.

Upcoming Supermoons in 2024

Astrology enthusiasts and skywatchers have much to anticipate in 2024, with two supermoons set to grace the night sky. Each supermoon offers its own unique charm and significance, so let’s explore what’s coming up.

October Super Hunter’s Moon

The third full moon considered a supermoon in 2024 will light up the sky on October 17. Known as the Super Hunter’s Moon, this moon marks the first full moon after the Harvest Moon.

Traditionally, it provided light for hunters tracking game. Expect a brilliant and captivating display, perfect for those wanting to capture the moon’s beauty in photographs.

There will also be an annular solar eclipse, or “ring of fire” eclipse, when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, but is at or near its farthest point from our planet, on Oct. 2.

November Final Supermoon

The last supermoon of the year will occur on November 15, 2024. This supermoon will conclude the year’s celestial show, offering a final opportunity to witness the moon at its closest approach to Earth.

It will be an excellent time to reflect on the wonders of the lunar cycle and appreciate the beauty of our natural satellite.

Viewing Tips

For those looking to make the most of these supermoons, a bit of planning can go a long way.

But don’t wait until the night of the full supermoon—start your observations during the waxing gibbous moon phase. This phase occurs a few days before the full moon, when the moon is more than half but not fully illuminated. It’s an excellent time to watch as the moon grows brighter and larger each night.

Here are some tips for optimal viewing:

Location:

  • Choose a location away from city lights to minimize light pollution.

  • Elevated areas like hills or mountains can provide clearer views.

Timing:

  • Check local moonrise times, as the moon appears largest when it is near the horizon.

  • Early mornings or evenings are often the best times for supermoon watching.

Equipment:

  • While the supermoon is visible to the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope can reveal more details.

  • A DSLR camera with a telephoto lens can help capture the moon’s grandeur in photos.

Scientific Significance

While supermoons are visually captivating, they also have subtle scientific effects on Earth. Their proximity can result in slightly stronger tidal forces, called "perigean spring tides." These perigean or king or supermoon spring tides tend to follow the date of new or full moon by a day or so.

From a research perspective, supermoons offer a chance to study the moon's impact on Earth, including potential effects on the ionosphere and atmosphere. They also provide a good opportunity for lunar geologists to observe the moon’s surface features in greater detail.

Cultural Impact

Supermoons captivate public interest around the world. From social media buzz to live-streamed events, these celestial displays draw large audiences. They are also significant in various cultural and spiritual practices. In some traditions, a supermoon is seen as a time for reflection, renewal, or even setting intentions for the future.

Artists and poets often draw inspiration from these lunar events. The sight of a luminous supermoon has sparked countless paintings, photographs, and literary works, reminding us of the moon’s enduring presence in human creativity and imagination.

Astrological Significance of Supermoons

In astrology, supermoons are considered powerful cosmic events that amplify the energy of the moon’s influence on our lives. The moon governs our emotions, instincts, and inner world. When a supermoon occurs, its energy is heightened, making us more attuned to our feelings and subconscious desires.

Emotional Intensity

During a supermoon, emotions may feel more intense or overwhelming. It’s as if the moon’s energy pulls on our emotional tides, just as it affects the ocean’s waves. This can be a time of emotional breakthroughs or heightened sensitivity. It’s beneficial to stay grounded and mindful during these periods, using this heightened awareness to explore and understand your inner self.

Opportunities for Release and Renewal

Supermoons are also potent times for release and renewal. The amplified lunar energy can help illuminate what’s no longer serving us, encouraging us to let go of outdated patterns or habits. This is a great time for setting intentions, journaling, or performing rituals that focus on cleansing and renewal.

Impact on Zodiac Signs

The influence of a supermoon varies depending on which zodiac sign the moon is in. For example:

  • Aries Supermoon: Encourages bold action and personal empowerment.

  • Taurus Supermoon: Highlights themes of stability, comfort, and self-worth.

  • Scorpio Supermoon: Brings intense emotional transformation and deep healing.

Each sign adds its unique flavor to the supermoon’s energy, influencing how we experience its effects on a personal and collective level.

Appreciating Celestial Events

Supermoons offer a beautiful reminder of our connection to the cosmos. They encourage us to look up, to take a moment away from our busy lives, and to marvel at the universe. Whether you're a seasoned stargazer or someone who simply enjoys the occasional skyward glance, supermoons provide an excellent opportunity to appreciate the wonders above.

So, when the next super moon rises, grab your binoculars, find a cozy spot outside, and let the moon's magic wash over you. After all, these are the moments that make us feel connected—to each other and to the vast sky we all share.
